Dave's Bike Race - Baker's Dozen

The Sixth Annual Leesburg Bakers Dozen is a 13+ hour Mountain Bike Race that started at 9:00am on April 14, 2011. The event was held on a private farm overlooking the Potomac River 3.5 miles North of Leesburg Virginia.  The course was about an 8.5 mile loop made up of rolling hills with plenty of semi-technical challenge in the form of rocks, roots, log piles, and small ledges. It was a fast course, but as time went on seemed to get harder and harder.

The race consists of a mass start at 9am and saw many riders trying to get a fast start and into the woods to avoid bottlenecking at the various obstacles which could cost you several minutes.  By the 2nd lap, racers were pretty well spread out with fast lap times running around 40 minutes and average times closer to 1 hour.

Home Base
Dave brought his tent with him with the intention of spending the night before and after the race, it also was a great place to store all of his stuff in between laps.
Concentrating on going over a nice pile of rocks!!
Because of the lack of rain the course was a dusty mess.  All riders were coming in covered in a few layers of dirt and there seemed to be a brown fog that permeated the air.  Sweat lines and sweat in the eyes took on a whole new meaning!!
No laughing in bike racing!
The kids waited patiently in the pine forest to see their Dad riding past.  You can see the dirt in the air as it was not only the riders who were covered, we ALL WERE COVERED!! :-)
Kids cheering for their dad!!  "Go Super Fast Daddy!!!"

Dave took a break from his laps to help Cora do her very first "Mountain Bike" race.  It was a race through a field, into the woods, then through a pine forest and back.  We originally did not sign her up for this race but as soon as her training wheels came off she practiced in the front yard and said she was ready.  There were about 40-50 kids in the race - with parents running along next to them to ensure safety, it was crowded!

Cora was there with her friend Riley and Dave decided he would stay with her during the race so Luke and I ventured off to find a place to take pictures and cheer Cora on.
Because the start was so crowded Dave decided to help Cora stay balanced through the stop/start of the first 200 yards.
But it didn't take long before he was running to keep up with her.  She had some trouble on the up hill parts - we are practicing this at home and I was worried about how she would do with people all around her and with rocks - but she only fell hard once and was able to get up quickly, only a few tears shed.
The kids were allowed to go around the 1/4 mile loop as many times as they wanted - Cora ended up doing the loop 3x during the "race" time and then later made me go back so Luke could ride his glide bike  :-(camera ran out of batteries by then)
For the most part, the course was flat, going through the bumpy grass and field proved just a bit harder then traveling through the nicely packed wood path.  When she was finished she and Luke both unanimously stated that they couldn't wait to do it again!!!
For most of the race Luke was running from place to place to cheer Cora on and when he got a chance to ride on Daddy's  shoulders - that made his day!!

(Although Daddy had some more laps to do and I am sure was very tired!)
The post race treat was ice cream.  Cora and eventually Luke sat and enjoyed their dessert!
After the ice cream - Dave was off again to complete some more laps in the dust!!
When we got home the kids were exhausted and we all were filthy. IT WAS A GREAT DAY!!!
