We went to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and were very happy with the day. I have lived in Maryland my entire life and have always gone to the National Zoo but have heard that the Baltimore Zoo is good for smaller kids.
The animals are closer with a zoo "expert" at most enclosures to talk about the animals, there is a great kids area (called the Bog), we fed a giraffe ($2.00 each stem), rode a camel ($5 per person), rode a Merry-Go-Round and a few other rides ($2.00 per person per ride).
Cora and Luke riding the airplane ride.
We also rode a train around the park, watched Elephants swim and play catch with a tire, as well as brushed some goats and pet some other farm animals.
It is EXPENSIVE! Our family of 4 spent over $100 between food, entrance to park, rides, and feeding the giraffe. Overall, it was a great experience and this is a nice place to consider as an alternative to the National Zoo!!!
Feeding the giraffe!! It happens VERY quickly so you really have to be camera ready. That is one hungry giraffe!!!
The giraffe's name was Angel. She is a "naughty" giraffe. She gets in trouble a lot for eating shirts, purses, hats, whatever she can get her tongue on!
The kids were right up close to this Croc. He kept putting his snout up against the glass so his teeth would scratch the glass!
Cora and Luke are both inside this giant example of an Oriole nest - but only Cora would pop her head up for a picture!
The highlight for me was the elephants. There were four of them and they were playing around and swimming. There was a baby named Sampson (yes the same as our dog - which was not lost on the kids) and the mama and two others. We stood about 20 feet from these animals and watched them play for a while. I didn't want to leave!!
